Summer 2010 Opportunities PDF Print E-mail

Students are encouraged to be active and pursue learning opportunities during the summer break.  Some of the local opportunities for middle school students are listed below:

Programs at Sidney Gutierrez Middle School (for SGMS Students only, $35 fee each):

  • Animated Film Camp – The award-winning team, Karen Aqua and Ken Field from Boston, MA, will work with students to create an animated film with soundtrack during this week-long camp – June 14 to 18, 9am – 4 pm each day.  [See Brochure] for more information.
  • Writing with Technology Camp – The High Plains Writing Project will help students to write scripts and film stories during this week-long camp – June 7-11 (see Mrs. Lawner for more information) [See Brochure]
  • Public Speaking/Debate Camp – Jacqueline Hewitt leads students in a week-long program of lively Public Speaking and Debate exercises – June 21-25.  [See Brochure] for more information.

Sign up forms are available from Mrs VanLaningham and placement will be on a first come, first serve basis. Scholarships are available.

Roswell Museum and Art Center Classes

Spring River Zoo Camp, 2 sessions, $50 each:

This year’s Zoo Camp will be about mammals and will be held June 21-25 and July 19-23. The cost is $50.00 and the time is from 8:00- 12:30.  You can pick up an application at the Zoo office Mon.-Fri. from 10:00-4:00.

Junior Leadership Camp, 3 sessions, $300 each:

There will be 3 sessions of this week-long camp for 6th, 7th and 8th graders that builds leadership skills (starting 6/6, 6/13, 6/20).  The camp is boarding at NMMI and the fee of $300 includes room, board, and all activities.  For the brochure and information, see http://www.nmmi.edu/summer/jlc/index.htm

USA Chess Camp

All Saints Catholic School will host the USA Chess/Video Game Design camp the week of July 19th.  Register online for half or full day combinations of these excellent programs.  See www.usachess.com

British Soccer Camp

Different sessions will be held for ages 3-18 at Cielo Grande Soccer Complex from July 12-16.  For more information and to register, see https://registration.challengersports.com

Soccer Speed & Skills Camp

Speed Trainers USA will hold Soccer Speed & Skills Camps at Cielo Grande July 19-23.  Sessions for ages 5 through high school level and coaches clinic will be held.  Applications are available through RYSA, Roswell Parks & Recreation, and at SGMS. [See Brochure]

UNM Summer Law Camp

Two week-long programs are offered at UNM this summer for current 6th and 7th grade students (week of June 6th and week of June 13th).  The program is free to selected students, but the application is lengthy, and is due by April 30.  Get started now if you are interested.

City sports camps

Roswell Community Little Theater – Annual Youth Production & Workshop will be directed by Edie Stevens. Auditions:  May 24 & 25 at 7pm at the theatre on North Virginia. Performance dates are July 16, 17, & 18, 2010. Two plays will be performed: "The Suessification of Romeo & Juliet" written by Peter Bloedel and "Illinois Jane and the Rainforest of Retribution" written by T.James Belich. Learn about scripts, acting, directing, lighting, costuming and make-up application all at the workshop! Sponsored in part by Xcel Energy. Rehearsal times will be determined by applicant and director availability.
